2008-2009 Regular Season: Postgame - Troy Aikman Chimes In

STRAIGHT FROM SI.COM, REGARDING POST-GAME COMMENTS FROM AIKMAN: They might be the most talented team in the NFL, he said, but he worries whether they will fracture and lose sight of what it takes to be a real winner. It isn't just because receiver Terrell Owens is whining about not being involved enough in the Cowboys' offense.

And it isn't just because defensive back Adam Jones is in hot water again after tangling with one of his bodyguards. Those distractions now include head coach Wade Phillips' suddenly contentious relationship with the Dallas media, but Aikman is concerned with issues on the field, not off of it.

"Do they have the people in place and the talent to go all the way? I'd say absolutely," Aikman said. "If they don't, it would be because they didn't maximize what they have. . . . If you don't pay attention to the little things, you can very easily start to decline as a team without even knowing it.

I went through that after Jimmy (Johnson) left. I'm not saying this team is going through that, but I know the team feels they should be playing better than they are currently, and they have to be careful."

Troy Aikman owes no such professionalism to his former football team, or any other, but you simply have to appreciate how well he couches his comments, as well as how he pulls no punches during his typically nationally broadcast Cowboys games.

In any event, measured comments or not, Aikman tells it like it is, and, sadly, he is onto something; a monster that seems to grow with each game that passes, win or lose.
